The Fort Edward region is abundant in local history, dating back from the French and Indian Wars.   The present village of Fort Edward was called "Wahcoloosencoochaleva", or The Great Carrying Place" because it was the starting point of a portage between the Hudson River and Lake Champlain.  The Great Carrying Place became a most important strategic military base of operations throughout the 18th Century.

Fort Edward is proud of its Heritage and several local organizations have taken careful steps to document and display the important part that Fort Edward played in the early years of the Country.
