Riverside Schoolhouse – This one-room schoolhouse was originally located on West River Road in the Town of Northumberland, Saratoga County. Built around the turn of the 20th century along the banks of the Hudson River this school was used by rural students for nearly 65 years before it was closed in the mid-1950’s. |
| Students could receive their education through the 8th grade here. If continuing their secondary educations students would then travel to Schuylerville, South Glens Falls or Fort Edward High Schools. The building was abandoned after it closed and was donated to Fort Edward Historical Association in 1994. Moved to the Old Fort House Museum, the Northumberland District #5 School was restored and opened for exhibit in 1996. |

The Schoolhouse Privy is the newest structural exhibit at the
museum. This privy was built in the 1930’s and was located at the
Lakeville Baptist Church in Cossayuna. The congregation of this church
donated this great little building in the spring of 2003 to help us
teach children and youth another aspect of ife in bygone days. Larmon
House Movers of Schuylerville made quick work of removing the privy from the
church yard and positioning it in place near the Riverside Schoolhouse. This privy features three seats to accommodate comfortably different sized folks. Early in 2004 we plan to plant a small aromatic garden near this building as would have been used when the building was new. |
Every June a celebration is held at the schoolhouse honoring retired local teachers who have made a significant difference in their students' lives and the school community as a whole. Nominations from their colleagues are made each spring to the Historical Association Committee. Usually three to four recipients are selected for this honor. Anyone interested can contact the Historical Association for further information.
