The Law office was originally located at the end of Eddy Street in Fort Edward and was purchased by Scott Paper Company and scheduled for demolition to provide room for a new entrance to the facility. The Greek Revival building was saved with the assistance of Scott Paper and many interested members of the community and moved to the Museum campus in 1982, where it underwent extensive restoration. A visit to the law office is a trip back in time. Each of the two rooms is furnished with period barrister bookcases and law books. Pocket doors dividing the two rooms allowed for privacy and a large cast iron woodstove provided heat. High tech items for their era, various typewriters and an early calculator show visitors how business was conducted in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Young visitors may wonder where the telephone and computer and other modern amenities are stored. |
