The Fort Edward Free Library was established in September 1914.  The Library subsequently opened at the corner of Broadway and Washington Streets.  In 1919 it was then moved to 190 Broadway and in 1932 the library moved to its present location at 23 East Street, the former Crane House.  The library building, circa 1850, has seen many changes through the years.

In 1996, the library expanded and the children's room was added.  Other library renovations at that time consisted of new library shelving, carpeting, circulation desk, sliding windows and landscaping.

Thanks go to John Weber of Weber Cabinets, Fort Edward, for providing the shelving and circulation desk.

In 2006, the Library front reading room was remodeled with new shelving thanks to the estate of Marietta Hana, a former Fort Edward High School Math teacher.  The construction was under the direction of Alan of Weber Cabinets of Fort Edward.

The library is fully automated.  There are two computers available for public use and internet access.  The library now has a WIFI connection which will accommodate local patrons as well as visitors during the summer.  A laptop computer will be arriving in the near future and will be dedicated to medical research.  The library's holdings consist of over 14,000 adult and children materials.

The majority of library materials are loaned out on a two week basis with the exception being videos and new titles.  All library materials may be renewed by telephone at least one time a month.

The library is funded by the Village, Town and Fort Edward School District.  Other financial support comes from trusts, bequeaths, donations and the Southern Adirondack Library System.  Library programs are sponsored throughout the year and many are funded by our library system, The Southern Adirondack Library System.
